Torches can light things on fire, barrels and trees can blow up, metal things can pin your enemies - it's very fun and provides a lot of room for tactics (since you often destroy the object in the process, or sometimes you need to lure enemies in to the right one)!Īll in all, I highly recommend Wildermyth. Take spellcasting, for example: Wildermyth uses an innovative system where instead of just throwing fireballs, you attune to the spirit of various objects on the battlefield and use them against enemies. On top of that, the stories and battles are actually good! It's not like you have to bear with any aspect of Wildermyth just to have fun with another. The only other game I remember doing something close is Massive Chalice, but it was far less impressive. So when you get an option to retire them at the end of a campaign, making available as sort of "fabled heroes" to be hired in others, they do genuinely feel like fabled heroes - you can remember their stories (often another issue with games that do things like there - having traits is not the same as having memorable traits). Characters grow old (again, changing visually), their mutations develop, they acquire new skills and traits, personalizing your story. In between these stories, you manage the realm and fight enemies.Įach campaign spans several years. Characters are changed by the choices you make, often visually - the most interesting events offer mutations, like clowly calcifying into a crystal golem or changing your hands into ethereal star-whips. Apart from the main story, random events occur, told via comics and offering the player choices based on character traits. You choose a campaign, which serves as a sort of "spine" for future stories. Procedurally generated stories tend to be shallow and lack charisma, and great strategies that have you breed generations of characters (like, say, Rimworld) tend to be sandboxes, with stories told by player experience, not comics. A lot of games try this - and it just never works. On paper, "multi-generational tactic with choice-based procedurally generated story" sounds like something I'd be very skeptical about. This game is so much better than it has any right to be, I'm genuinely baffled. It's the perfect time to pick up the main game and the DLC if you haven't already!
